Kenya will play Ethiopia in the final group stage game
The Kenyan Handball Youth team has advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing Africa Zone 5 IHF tournament with a group stage match to spare after whitewashing South Sudan 57-09 at the Nyayo Court.
The youth team (Under 18) registered the massive win hardly an hour after the Junior team (Under 20) schooled South Sudan 49-15 at the Ulinzi Complex in their second group stage game.
The Kenyan Youth had opened their quest to retain the title with a 59-11 win over Djibouti and would go on to serve South Sudan with a similar dose to advance to the semis.
Andrew Owino's charges will tackle Ethiopia in the final group stage match on Thursday, an encounter that Kenya will be seeking to win so as to emerge as the pool winners.
Owino, noted that the opening two matches offered little or no challenge to his players but expects a slightly tougher game against Ethiopia. Kenya beat Ethiopia 37-21 during the 2018 final.
"The past two games have not been tough as anticipated. We haven't faced an opponent who has tested us but the clash against Ethiopia, I hope will be different from the last two games," he said.
Against, South Sudan, Yusuf Pwoka was the lead tormentor as he accounted for twelve goals with Mathew Kiprop scoring eight. Alex Mwanzia forced the ball past the goalkeeper six times.
Okoth Ngumbi found the back of the net seven times while the duo of Paul Ndeva and Derrick Mayindo scoring five times.
The duo of Dalmas Wanyonyi and Ezra Haggai netted three times each while Geoffrey Kimutai was on the scoresheet four times.
Bosco Ngumbi scored twice while Isidore Mwendwa and Richard Mayindo scored a goal apiece.
